Sport was the theme in Twizel when the annual Hard Labour Weekend multi-sport event returned to the South Canterbury town.

The two-day competition began at Lake Ruataniwha on Saturday morning as paddlers took to the hydro canals for a 20km paddle ending at Lake Benmore.

Many competitors then switched to their bikes, joined by hundreds of other riders, for the mountain bike races from Ben Ohau on Saturday afternoon.

The competition concluded on Sunday with the running events over the Pyramid Saddle.

The Hard Labourer event (combining all three disciplines) was won by Ryan Kiesanowski with a time of 4 hours 42 minutes across all three races, followed by Sam Goodall and Steven Armstrong.

The women’s section was won by Ailsa Rollinson with a time of 5hr 34min, followed by Claire Bell and Kat Bulk.

Courier reporter Greta Yeoman popped along on Saturday.
