Weeks of training and fundraising will soon pay off for members of the Roncalli College under-15 boys’ rugby team.
The Rural Livestock Junior Rugby Tournament, for boys aged under 15 as at January 1, will be held in Mosgiel from Monday, August 29 to Wednesday, August 31.
The Roncalli team is in full training mode to take on some of the best secondary school under-15 rugby teams in the South Island.
Team manager Lisa Richards said the boys had been raising money for the tournament by helping one of the coaches with painting and gardening.
‘‘They will also be helping unload carpet for a local carpet place. This will be good for their fitness,’’ she said.
The team was excited about competing in the tournament and the challenges it would provide, she said.
It cost about $210 to send a player to the tournament. Practices would be in full swing next week, but much work had gone on behind the scenes before the tournament, she said.
‘‘That’s been organising accommodation, food, uniforms, parent help and the like.’’
The boys were still playing their Roncalli rugby at the moment.
The competition would be strong, she said.
