Timaru will host two junior rugby league tournaments later this year.
Chairman of the Timaru Outlaws Rugby League Club and Aoraki League official Steve McKeown said Southern Zone Rugby League had allocated a one-day tournament for under-16 and under-18 teams on October 10.
There would also be a South Island under-14 development tournament for girls and boys grades in Timaru the same month.
“We’ve made contact with Alpine Energy Stadium and we’ll book that.”
Teams would be coming from Otago, Southland, the West Coast and Canterbury.
The Timaru Outlaws Club has under-8s, under-10s and under-12s playing in competitions with three other clubs Cowboys (from Temuka, Geraldine, Pleasant Point), Ashburton Barbarians and the Chertsey Oilers.
McKeown said the Outlaws had four junior teams and one senior team based at Ashbury Park.
The seniors would start their season next month playing through September and into October.
“We’re building all right; we should do OK this year.”
Two junior boys attended a development camp at Nga Puna Wai sports hub in Christchurch on July 12. The day consisted of rugby league skill, wellbeing and game sessions presented by the southern zone and New Zealand Rugby League staff.
