Reigning South Canterbury senior rugby champion Temuka has shown it will again be a force to beat in this year’s Hamersley Cup competition.

The Covid-19-delayed competition kicked off on Saturday, Temuka hosting near neighbour Pleasant Point before a good-sized crowd at the Temuka Domain.

A spirited Point was still in the game going into the second half and showed plenty of fire but too much power in the midfield and out wide on the part of Temuka resulted in an easy 46-12 win for the side.

In other matches, Waimate thrashed Celtic 43-7 at Alpine Energy Stadium in Timaru and Old Boys racked up the points against Geraldine, winning 85-12 in Geraldine.

In Fairlie, Mackenzie pipped Harlequins 14-12.

Points after round 1: Old Boys, Waimate, Temuka 5, Mackenzie 4, Harlequins 1, Pleasant Point, Celtic, Geraldine 0.

This weekend’s draw: Waimate v Mackenzie (Waimate), Pleasant Point v Celtic (Pleasant Point), Geraldine v Harlequins (Timaru), Old Boys v Temuka (Timaru Boys’ High School, No 1).
