Lowen (17) is ayear 12 pupil at Roncalli College and has been skating since she was 9.
She has twice been to the Oceania Speed Skating Championships. Her performance at the nationals in December will be a key factor in determining a place at the worlds in 2017.
Lowen said she dislocated her shoulder during a school trip in December 2014.
‘‘It’s pretty much all sorted now. I’m hoping to get [to the] skating world championships next year,’’ she said.
Her mother, Maree Lowen, said Sophie was determined to get to the world championships next year and would apply for a personal development sponsorship through Alpine Energy to help her with related costs.
Alpine Energy has also supported her previously and when corporate services manager Michael Boorer saw her skating earlier this week during a training session, he said he was pleased with her progress.
