South Canterbury eventers had a successful ride at the Springston Trophy eventing competition in Oamaru last week.

Nine riders from the South Canterbury Pony Club attended the main competition for pony clubs in the South Island.

One team from the Pleasant Point branch of the South Canterbury Pony Club finished sixth out of 39 teams in the event.

Teams came from Greymouth, Invercargill, Clyde, Dunedin, Christchurch, Amberley and two from the Nga Tawa branch, in Manawatu, to compete.

This year was the first year Pleasant Point PC had entered a full team, along with a composite team of Pleasant Point riders Cate Lightbourne and Abi Hyslop, Waimate competitor Paige Wijnveld and Billie Wilson, from the Hawea-Wanaka Pony Club.

The full Pleasant Point team – of Dana MacClure, Teagan Marett, Ruby Sugrue, Ginny Kerr, Amanda Shallard and Zoe MacClure – finished the dressage stage of the competition in 11th place, moved up to eighth on the second day, after the cross-country section, and to sixth place after the showjumping stage on the final day. The competition was won by View Hill Red, located north of Darfield.

The 2019 competition will be hosted by the Halswell branch.
