Caravan and motor home owners will converge on Temuka next month for a weekend of sports and games.
The second Temuka Movaner Games will be held from March 3-5, at the Temuka Holiday Park, and organisers hope to better last year’s attendance.
Games committee member Jo Bolton said online registrations already sat at about 56. This time last year, before the event, seven were signed up.
“A lot are coming back for the event from last year,” she said.
The weekend will include sports, quizzes and a social, all in a Masters Games-style event.
“We held our first games last year and it was an idea from ex-Temuka person John Hammond, who has a motor home.
“He saw an opportunity for the Temuka Camping Ground and district to host something fun and get people here. Everything is here [at the camping ground].”
Last year, people travelled from throughout New Zealand, from as far north as the Bay Of Islands, to take part in the games.
Fellow committee member Carol Monk said the idea was to attract people to the town and offer them a weekend away which was fun.
At least 20 volunteers will be helping at the games and Temuka businesses had been very supportive, she said.
“It’s just a lot of fun.”
The weekend begins on the Friday afternoon with golf and lawn bowls and a quiz and bingo at night, and on Saturday there will be cycling, walking, petanque, mini golf, indoor bowls, novelty swimming and a mystery bus tour.
A medal presentation will take place on Saturday night, with a dance to follow.
Mrs Monk said very few parks in New Zealand offered such a scenic setting.
“We can’t wait for the games to get under way.
“We’re really encouraging people to come along and join in.”
It is hoped the event will be held every year, or every second year, she said.
