Timaru competitors had a gruelling but successful time in the hugely challenging Coast to Coast at the weekend.

Simone Faulkner placed third in the women’s 40 to 49 division, finishing in 15hr 50min 24sec in the Longest Day.

Bruce Hutchison and Darren P. Gallagher contested the Classic 50-58 Longest Day, Hutchison placed sixth in his age category, in 16hr 11min 58sec, while Darren P. Gallagher finished in 19hr 13min 8sec.

Anthony Eyles also contested the Longest Day in the 18-38 age group ,finishing in 16hr 38min 34sec.

Three from Timaru took part in the two-day individual. Matt Bowater, in the open 18-38 division, finished 52nd of 181 male competitors in 15hr 17min 12sec; Shane Ashley (40-49 age group) did 16hr 26min 22sec and Kirk Falconer (also 40-49) 20hr 9min 12sec.

In the 18-39 men’s individual mountain run, Tom Hall was 19th of 71 males and 14th of 40 in his age category.

Dougal Allan, of Wanaka, won the men’s Longest Day and and Simone Maier, also of Wanaka, the women’s. Allan prevailed after a fierce three-way battle with Christchurch-based Sam Mason and leading Australian multi-sport athlete Alex Hunt.

The women’s race was equally exciting with Maier beating four time champion Elina Ussher of Nelson by 11 minutes and Fiona Dowling (Alexandra) who came home third, two minutes behind Ussher.
