Fun bubbles over in new football league

A new Timaru sports league involves footballs and bubbles.
The South Canterbury YMCA has set up a bubble football league, set to kick off at the Southern Trusts Event Centre on October 20.
South Canterbury YMCA recreation facilitator James Coyle said the competition would include two leagues — one for ages 12 to 15 and a senior league for those aged 16 and above.
Coyle said the competition would be something fun and different for the community.
‘‘We recognised through social media that bubble football had really taken off in other locations,’’ he said.
Coyle said the organisation wanted to ‘‘get in on the craze’’ of bubble football in New Zealand.
The YMCA raised funds, through grants, for the football equipment and then decided to set up a league in Timaru.
‘‘We wanted to offer something to the community,’’ Coyle said.
He said the game required players to wear a bubble, with their legs sticking out.
‘‘You have to try to play football in a normal way.
‘‘You end up bouncing off other players. It’s just football with a lot of fun.’’
The Timaru league will run for six weeks, with 20-minute games, beginning on October
20. Each team must have a minimum of five players, with a maximum of eight.
Teams can be mixed or single-sex. – Anyone wanting more information is asked to contact James on 0278 084-311.
