Couple free with yoga knowledge

A visiting Indian couple have been teaching the art of yoga in the region.
Bharat Gupta and his wife Sarog have spent the past three months in Timaru and will travel home to India at the end of July.
While visiting the region to spend time with their son, who works as a control system engineer in Timaru, they have been teaching residents yoga for free. They have introduced yoga to several South Canterbury organisations, to help with health issues.
‘‘I retired in 2009 and I wasn’t interested in sitting idle at home,’’ Mr Gupta said.
The pair had studied yoga from a young age as it was taught in schools in India. They decided they wanted to pass their knowledge on to others, so wherever they travel, they teach yoga.
‘‘In India, we never sit a single day idle.
‘‘We teach the people.’’
While in Timaru, the pair have given classes as well as visiting several organisations, including the Cancer Society.
He had visited the society on Tuesday mornings for the past few weeks, offering classes to patients, Mr Gupta said.
The sessions had been popular and relaxation classes would continue at the centre every Tuesday from 10am. The classes were free of charge to cancer patients and survivors in the community.
‘‘We enjoy helping people and getting people out of their retirement and moving.’’
The pair had enjoyed their time in Timaru, even if the colder weather felt ‘‘odd’’. – For more information, contact Mr Gupta on 027 320-0484.MysneakersNike
