South Canterbury was well represented in the annual Coast to Coast from Kumara to New Brighton in Christchurch on Friday and Saturday. More than 1000 competitors contested the event either as individuals but mainly in teams over the one or two days. After a week of wet weather a route change was made: organisers dropped the Goat Pass traverse due to the Otira and Deception rivers being too dangerous to cross. An alternative route was used for the mountain run The Longest Day titles went to Whakatane’s Sam Clark in the elite men’s and Tauranga’s Corrinne O’Donnell claimed the women’s title.
