A new sport initiative for school-aged children, with sessions and coaching programmes, will start in Waimate this month.
Waimate District Council community and strategy group manager Carolyn Johns said the programme would incorporate a wide variety of sporting activities, including climbing, soccer, badminton, skating, snag golf, yoga, and many more.
“We’re excited about providing the programme because it’s free of charge and Give Sport a Go offers a taste of the different clubs available across the district.”
Give Sport a Go is a Sport Canterbury initiative and aims to encourage more young people into sport.
The council has received $4500 funding to enable the Waimate Event Centre to run the programme.
The four-week programme starts at the Waimate Event Centre on November 11 to and runs to December 4 from 3.30pm-4.30pm for the junior sessions. Secondary school sessions will follow early next year.
