Girls are being urged to put aside their smartphones and have some fun exercising next month.

Sport Canterbury sports adviser Linda Kenny said a special day was being organised for girls to have a go at sports they might not have had a chance to try.

“It’s part of a new strategy from Sport New Zealand encouraging girls to participate and so we’re doing it. My thought was to use bases in Timaru and we came up with Caroline Bay.

“It will be a chance to give girls exposure to what sports are available in the area and to gain confidence trying activities they haven’t done before.”

The event would be called “Have A Go Day” and was aimed at year 8 girls. Invitations had been sent out to schools in South Canterbury and Ms Kenny expected many would take part.

The sports on offer included yachting, paddle boating, beach volleyball, cricket, disk golf and “quick-rip” rugby.

Support had come from the Timaru Yacht and Power Boat Club, the South Canterbury Rugby Union, South Canterbury Cricket, the South Canterbury Speed Skating Club and the Timaru District Council.

“It will be a great day. Each individual sport will run the activities and we’ll co-ordinate them,” Ms Kenny said.

“Have a Go Day” will be held on Friday, March 6.Sports ShoesAir Jordan
