Timaru District Libraries is encouraging youth to showcase their photography talents.
Library staff launched a photography competition during Youth Week, May 21-29, and are also welcoming entries throughout June.
Library assistant Anna Keir is among those promoting the event and wants young people to get creative and share their talents.
‘‘We’re tapping into the creativity [of youth] through the photography competition and it’s helping diversify the library,’’ she said.
She said the Geraldine library had received some interest from young people, but encouraged more to take part in the fun, creative event.
The competition was also a reminder to the community that libraries were not just about books.
Library assistant Sharn Siataga said entries, which must be received at the Timaru, Geraldine or Temuka libraries no later than 5pm on June 30, could eventually feature in a ‘‘roving exhibition’’.
‘‘We’re hoping that if we get a good response that we can put together a display that will move between the three libraries — Timaru, Geraldine and Temuka.’’
Winners will be announced on July 6.
For more information visit one of the three libraries in person, or the Timaru District Libraries website or Facebook page.
Entrants must be aged between 13 and 19 as at Saturday, May 21, 2016.
