2018 was an eventful year for South Canterbury. The Courier reporters Greta Yeoman, Claire Allison and Chris Tobin look back at some of the leading stories of the year’s papers.

Timaru motorbikers meandering down the main streets of Timaru starred on the front page of The Courier‘s October 4 edition.

Thirty-seven riders took part in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Timaru, which was one of hundreds held worldwide.

The event raised $4690 for men’s health initiative Movember.

The ride was one of several South Canterbury fundraisers for Movember, alongside the soapbox derby in Stafford St in November.

The derby raised $5629 for men’s health.

Co-organiser Felicity Bruce said 55 teams using homemade carts raced down the street over jumps, to the enjoyment of a packed crowd.

She said the team behind the TiMOru Soapbox Derby was planning for a third event.

“We are definitely looking at doing another soapbox in 2019.”
