2018 was an eventful year for South Canterbury. The Courier reporters Greta Yeoman, Claire Allison and Chris Tobin look back at some of the leading stories of the year’s papers.

Elected president of the Caroline Bay Carnival Association at just 31, Allen Martin said in July he wanted to take the carnival to the next level.

“We’re always going to have another carnival, but we want to grow, and be bigger and better. You’ve got to be a wee bit ambitious.”

Mr Martin’s priorities are looking at areas that could be improved, and attracting more volunteers to help run the event.

In mid-December, he said the annual helpers meeting had resulted in about 22 new applications – probably triple the usual amount.

Taking on board feedback, the association had moved the Queen of the Carnival pageant from New Year’s Eve, and combined it with the Miss Caroline Bay pageant, instead of running separate events.

“Another area is entertainment, and we’ve made a conscious effort to mix it up a little, and introduce a variety of styles of music.”
