Yacht club opens its doors as season starts

Timaru’s nautical season has set sail.

The Timaru Yacht and Powerboat Club held its opening-day ceremony last weekend, marking the start of its season.

People of various ages and sailing experience attended the event, which started with an opening ceremony on Saturday and continued with people getting out on the water for some fun over Saturday and Sunday.

Junior syndicate representative Rob Berger said the event was attended by 22 youngsters.

Seven of those were new to the sport and were now deciding whether to join the club officially.

Mr Berger was pleased with the turnout.

“We had a pretty good time out there,” he said.

He said it was not too late for people to take advantage of Timaru’s sailing facilities and he encouraged anyone wanting to take up the sport to do so.

“Anyone who missed [last weekend’s event] can come along any other Saturday or Sunday.”

He said, ideally, 9.30am was a good time to head to the club, with the aim of getting on the water by about 10am, weather permitting.

A range of yachts are available to hire from the club, along with life jackets, spray jackets and wetsuits.MysneakersWoman Shoes
