Writing camp draws 15

A former Timaru man has brought his love of words back to town.
Author Brian Falkner held his Write Like An Author school holiday camp at Mountainview High School last week.
The camp was a four-day course covering subjects such as story structure, character and conflict building, the framework of a story and building suspense.
Fifteen young writers from throughout the region took part in the course.
Helping guide the creative minds of young wordsmiths was an exciting career, Falkner said.
‘‘Somewhere in this camp now there is an up-and-coming New Zealand author,’’ he said.
Falkner, who is the awardwinning author of 15 books for children and young adults, published in more than 12 countries in seven different languages, grew up in Auckland and studied journalism but lived in Timaru in the 1980s, working for a radio station.
‘‘I was back here in March for the South Island Youth Librarians’ Conference and that’s how the camp here came about.’’
He had been touring the world teaching and coaching students in creative writing.
The idea for the camp came about after seeing holiday camps run in other subjects, he said.
‘‘There’s great camps for kids but nobody seemed to be doing a writing camp.’’Nike Sneakers StoreNike Tn Pas Cher, Nike Tn Soldes – nike tn pas cher
