World champion to compete in home town

South Canterbury’s shot put star Tom Walsh is set to return home for the opening event of a major athletics series next year.

The Timaru Super Shot, which will take place at the Caroline Bay Soundshell in March , is the first event in the 2018 Athletics New Zealand International Series.

World champion shot putter Walsh will headline the event and, along with Jacko Gill, will take on some of the world’s best shot putters.

Thousands of South Canterbury fans are expected to attend the gold coin event.

Timaru District mayor Damon Odey said securing a major national sporting event was a great opportunity for Timaru.

“We thought, what better way to celebrate this town’s world champion than to enable the people of Timaru see him doing what he does best.”

Mr Odey said Caroline Bay was an incredible asset for the town and would put the area on the national, potentially even international, stage.

The 2018 Athletics New Zealand International Series would also take place in Auckland, Christchurch and Whanganui.

Walsh said coming home to Timaru, and showing the other competitors the incredible scenery around the region, would be the highlight of the series for him.

“I’m particularly excited to host some of the world’s best throwers in my home town of Timaru. Hopefully, the locals will turn out in big numbers to watch us go at it.”Nike air jordan SneakersNike WMNS Air Force 1 Shadow White/Hydrogen Blue-Purple
