Geraldine photographer MattĀ Searle provided with this stunning image of the Aurora Australis event that happened throughout the country’s night skies on Sunday.
“I took photos from 9.30pm to 10pm at the cliffs overlooking the lagoon at the north side of the Rangitata River mouth, with this shot looking back towards Temuka,” Mr Searle said.
The green arch was visible to the naked eye.
The Aurora Australis is the result of particles in solar winds colliding with atmospheric gases.
The particles converge and become more visible close to Earth’s poles.
