Sports fields and school halls were the battlefields of primary school competitors last week.

Nine teams from South Canterbury schools battled it out on the fields of Timaru’s Alpine Energy Stadium last Wednesday to be named the top team in a years 7 and 8 10-a-side rugby tournament.

The tournament was was eventually won by Grantlea Downs School which beat Waimataitai School 24-22.

Later on Wednesday evening last week, it was a night of Timaru domination at the Otago Daily Times Extra! Central South Island current event quizzes.

Held in the Timaru Girls’ High School hall, the year 5/6 quiz was won by Sacred Heart School Timaru trio Christian McCambridge, Daniel van der Spuy and Jed Fenwick, who claimed the top spot for the second year in a row.

St Joseph’s (Team 21) claimed victory in the year 7/8 quiz later in the evening.

However, while Timaru had dominated the Wednesday evening events, it was a night of Ashburton achievement on Thursday evening, as Ashburton College claimed all three top spots in the year 9/10 event.
