Roncalli College pupil Phoebe Scarsbrook will be Rangitata’s Youth MP next year.

The year 11 pupil was one of 17 applicants – 11 from South Canterbury and six from Mid Canterbury – for the role, and along with pupils from Geraldine High School, Mountainview High School and Timaru Girls’ High School, was shortlisted and interviewed by Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon.

Mr Falloon said he was hugely impressed with the quality of applications.

“We’ve got some incredible young people in South Canterbury doing amazing things. It was a really hard choice but Phoebe stood out with her passion and commitment to social justice.

“She’s an accomplished debater and speaker which will come in handy in the robust environment of Parliament’s debating chamber.”

Phoebe will represent the Rangitata electorate in Youth Parliament next year.

It runs for two days in July, when 120 youth MPs from around New Zealand go to Wellington and sit as representatives.
