Police in Timaru and around the Aoraki police district are beefing up their presence over the Christmas-New Year period.
Senior Sergeant Dylan Murray, of Timaru, said a “higher police presence across Aoraki will help our community celebrate the holidays safely”.
“Our goal is to prevent serious crime, related victimisation and crashes that result in injury or death.”
Police in the Aoraki district had rostered on extra crime prevention teams for the weekends and days leading to Christmas and New Year.
“A higher police presence across Aoraki will help our community celebrate the holidays safely,” Snr Sgt Murray said.
The crime prevention teams would complement the frontline police safety team duties but were specifically concentrating on visits to licensed premises, random checkpoints and foot patrols at public events.
Additional staff would also be provided in the Mackenzie district and at Caroline Bay during New Year’s Eve celebrations, Snr Sgt Murray said.
