Plans already in place for ukulele festival

Ukuleles are still big business in Geraldine as organisers put plans in place for Ukefest 2017, just days after wrapping up this year’s event.
Australian-based ukulele band Sam and Lucy’s Hawaiian Adventure, has been secured for next year’s Geraldine Ukefest. Organisers have also confirmed a Hawaiian and Polynesian theme would be adopted for the event, which would return from July 7-9, 2017.
The Geraldine Ukefest was earlier this year ranked among the best six ‘‘not to be missed ukulele festivals’’ by Ukulele Magazine of the United States.
That announcement was a pleasing result for festival cofounders Hugh and Fi McCafferty, who were proud to have the event’s ranking ‘‘sandwiched’’ between Paris and Hawaii.
Their love of the event meant they had already started thinking about next year’s festival, which would include ‘‘all sorts of things’’, Mr McCafferty said.
The aim of next year’s festival was to take participants back to the roots of where the ukulele originated, Hawaii.
‘‘We [know] a woman who teaches Hawaiian dance and we hope to add that to the mix as well,’’ he said.
Open-mic events and ukulele cafe performances were among the events that would return to the festival next year, due to popular demand.
