Photo finds gold in grey day

Timaru photographer Chris Stanley was not going to let a rain-filled grey day ruin his idea of the perfect wedding shot.
In fact, the wet weather and overcast conditions provided Stanley with the recipe for anaward-winning photograph.
The image of couple Lydia and Devon Rennie kissing under an umbrella as the rain poured down around them earned Stanley a gold in the wedding creative section of the 2016 Epson New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Iris Awards held in Wellington on June
18.
Mr Stanley said he was surprised with his achievement.
‘‘I was surprised because I had seen some of the other photos that didn’t [get awards] and thought ‘‘gosh, if that’s the standard . . .
‘‘I was hoping for a bronze or a silver, at the most,’’ Mr Stanley said.
It was the first time he had entered the awards.
He had always been interested in photography, and taken up the hobby as a full-time job two years ago.
‘‘It’s just a passion for me that has turned into more than a passion and it’s grown.’’
