One of Timaru’s well-known landmarks had an unusual addition on Monday
The statue of Bob Fitzsimmons of Stafford and Strathallan Sts was holding a copy of the Ladybird book, People I like.
Fitzsimmons won the first New Zealand boxing championships in 1880 and successfully defended his title the following year.
He went on to became a professional boxer and won world titles in the middleweight, heavyweight and light-heavyweight divisions.
He was the first boxer in the world to win world titles in three weights.
The Timaru statue was commissioned by businessman and boxing enthusiast Bob Jones Windhausen.
