Help welcomed for new youth festival in district

A new youth festival could soon be on South Canterbury’s calendar.
The YMCA wants to create a new event to benefit young people throughout the district and welcomes others to help launch the initiative.
Spokeswoman Michele Keggenhoff is among those getting behind the project.
“If there’s people out there that get a bit excited about this and want to help, come on board to help us develop the idea,” she said.
“We would like help.”
The festival would likely be centred around music and was planned for early 2019 – some time between the Caroline Bay Carnival and the popular Rock and Hop.
“We’ve got a bit of a concept and ideas from people that want to come on board and help make this happen.”
The idea follows on from the YMCA’s 2017 South and Mid Canterbury Youth Survey, which attracted 724 respondents and almost 4500 comments.
Youth aged 12-24 years from Mid and South Canterbury took part in the survey.
“Young people are saying there’s not a whole lot to do.”
Mrs Keggenhoff said a recently established young professionals group had been proactive over recent months, creating events for the district’s calendar, which had helped the situation.
“We are doing a bit more work around that and helping to launch some smaller events – maybe one each quarter.”
