Looking at different ways to raise funds was one of the key topics at a regional conference held in Timaru last week.
The Literacy Aotearoa regional conference was held at the Landing Services Building last Wednesday and Thursday, attended by 35 managers, tutors, administration staff and governance members from throughout the South Island.
Literacy South Canterbury manager Richard Dugan said it had been many years since the region hosted the conference.
Literacy Aotearoa chief executive Bronwyn Yates said the conference was a chance to share information such as changes being made by national office and to talk about the different ways to acquire funding.
“We have a limited amount of funding and community grants,” she said.
“In addition to the Government’s funding of about $8 million annually we have to find funding for our 7500 students throughout the country.
“We have to look at how we access new funding avenues.”
Mr Dugan said more than 150 South Canterbury people used the service last year.
“We provide learning support to adults in the district and specialise in literacy and numeracy, with digital technology becoming increasingly important,” he said.
“All tutors are qualified and our service is very flexible.”
The conference was also a good chance for the organisation to promote the region, he said.
Everyone who attended received a goodie bag containing items made in South Canterbury, as well as taking a guided tour through the Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre and a visit to the group’s classroom, on the corner of Grey Rd and Arthur St, in Timaru.
Mr Dugan said the conference had also been a good chance for Literacy South Canterbury staff to learn how other branches operated.latest Nike releaseAir Jordan 5 (V) Original – OG White / Black – Fire Red
