Ivan Behrnes encouraged school pupils to keep an interest in current events as he wrapped up the final Otago Daily Times Extra! central South Island current event quiz last week.

Mr Behrnes and wife Anne have run the annual current events quizzes and spelling bees around the lower South Island for the past 15 years, and concluded their time with the central South Island events in Timaru last week.

“Keep interested in current affairs, please,” he told the pupils gathered at Timaru Boys’ High School.

That interest was evident across the three quizzes, with the winning years 9 and 10 section team from Mount Hutt College scoring 98 out of 100 questions correctly.

Three teams tied for second place – Mountainview 1, Timaru Boys’ 1 and Roncalli 5, each with a total of 93 points.

There was no third place awarded.

The years 7 and 8 section was won by Ashburton Intermediate, with 95 out of 100 questions answered correctly.

Gleniti No 2 came in second on 90 points, followed by Grantlea Downs School on 89.

The intermediate competition followed on from the years 5 and 6 quiz earlier in the day, where Temuka Primary’s No 1 team of Brylee Crawford, Marissa Shannon and Zoe Spillane came first after answering 93 of 100 questions correctly.

The top teams created a close competition with Gleniti No 2 coming in second with 91 points, while their schoolmates in Gleniti No1 took out third place just one point behind.
