Timaru’s popular annual Red Cross book sale will not be going ahead this month.

“Due to Covid-19 we’re postponing it,” one of the organisers, Janette Clark, said.

The hope was that another sale could be held but this was still dependent on where things went with Covid-19.

The sale had existed for about 40 years and last year raised $18,000.

Money from the book sale was used to fund the South Canterbury Red Cross to meet needs in the community such as providing first aid courses, winter bedding packs or paying for children’s swimming lessons.

“The public are very generous in donating books during the year and supporting us,” Mrs Clark said.

“Most of the sorting of books throughout the year is undertaken by four or five volunteers.

“We’re disappointed not to be holding the sale as we’ve been working all year for this; we’ll have to put our thinking caps on.”

The sale was to have been held from September 19-21.
