Toby Cuthbertson has no secret to why his birds are prizewinners.
The 9-year-old, of Timaru, was the youngest entrant in the Timaru Bird Show, held at the Waimataitai School hall at the weekend, and several of his birds won awards.
“I just feed them seed and don’t do anything special,” he said.
Toby’s birds won best Gloster canary in the show, best novice and best junior.
He got into owning and breeding birds about a year ago, following on from his grandfather Bruce Karton.
“I got into it because of him.”
Toby said he had been pleasantly surprised by his achievements, and would probably use his prize money to buy more bird seed.
He said his favourite kind of bird was a finch.
Bird show manager Mr Karton said the annual show attracted 575 entrants from throughout the South Island.
A lot of preparation had gone into the event, he said.
“Next year we’ll be hosting the national bird show in Timaru, which will be a lot of work.”
The weekend’s show featured a range of birds, including canaries, finches and budgies.
