The Mackenzie District Council has joined the campaign to discourage people from using straws.

Council solid waste manager Angie Taylor said the council was encouraging residents to decline a straw when ordering a drink in the district.

She said straws were regularly found as rubbish in waterways around the district, including the canals during a community clean-up, and were toxic to fish and bird life if swallowed.

While it was understandable that young or elderly residents, or those with a medical condition, needed to use straws, those who did not should try to lessen their straw usage, Ms Taylor said.

The council was encouraging cafe and bar owners to join the “straw-free” movement.
