Pipe drumming veteran Liz Taylor (61) was recently made a life member of the Mackenzie Highland Pipe Band.
Mrs Taylor joined the Mackenzie band 25 years ago, when she moved to Fairlie.
Despite now living in Timaru, she continues to travel 120km every week for band practice.
“I love doing it so I keep going.
“I’m staying there till I can’t walk! There’s such a nice bunch of people and I love drumming.”
Becoming a life member was a real honour, the pipe drum sergeant said.
“I couldn’t believe it. I heard my name, and next thing they brought me these beautiful flowers.”
Mackenzie pipe major Heather Fifield described Mrs Taylor as very hardworking and loyal.
“Liz is always up for a parade.
“In the last two years we have seen Liz with her arm in plaster, wearing a moon boot, and her leg in a brace and she still comes to band practice!”
Mrs Taylor began drumming when she was 13, for the Timaru Ladies Pipe Band. It was a way to connect with her Scottish heritage and she had an uncle and a cousin involved in pipe bands, she said.
There were many band events from October to March, especially during December when there were multiple Christmas parades.
Mrs Taylor reflected on playing at midnight on New Year’s Eve, followed by the parade on New Year’s Day.
As the drum sergeant, Mrs Taylor leads the drum corp, tutors the young drummers, and encourages them to wear their uniform with pride.
She is also a regular baker for band events.
“A bands supper is not complete without considerable effort from Liz,” Ms Fifield said.
Mrs Taylor’s husband Warren was a great helper at band parades, carrying her drum, checking all her buttons were done up and attaching the embellishment on to her uniform, she said.
Mrs Taylor occasionally helps out other pipe bands in Waimate and Timaru. As an award-winning gardener and recent winner of trophies for baking at the A&P show, Mrs Taylor is a busy woman.
“It’s hard to believe that I have time to go to work. But I just love playing.”affiliate tracking url30 Teddy Bear Coat Outfits to Brave the Cold in Style , Trnds
