A free bag of kindling is just part of the drawcard for people to attend one of four woodburner events coming up in Timaru, organised by Environment Canterbury (ECan).

Smoke-free Burning Demos on May 2 and 3, at 10am and 5.30pm each day, at Breen Plumbing, will give people the chance to see both an ultra-low-emission woodburner and a low-emission woodburner in action, ask questions, and walk away with a free bag of kindling to encourage better burning at home.

The sessions will be led by New Zealand Home Heating Association “firemaster” Dave Pullen, who will demonstrate the difference between the low-emission and ultra-low emission burners.

He will also be giving plenty of tips on easy fire-lighting, including the importance of using plenty of kindling and how to burn smoke-free.

Each session will last for about 90 minutes.

ECan staff will also be on hand to answer questions on upgrading woodburners and the regulations in place to help improve air quality in Timaru and South Canterbury.

ECan Timaru operations manager Judith Earl-Goulet said the aim of the demos was to upskill residents on how to burn smoke-free, as well as highlight what home heating options were now available.

“If seeing is believing for you, then the live demonstration of the low-emission and ultra-low-emission woodburners will give you a great opportunity to have a proper look at how these woodburners work,” she said.

People unable to attend the public events can still contact ECan for one-on-one advice.
