“When my wife Soana passed away on the 11th of November six years ago, my three boys and sister-in-law were concerned how I’d look after myself,” David Thomson (77), a retired engineer who lives on a small farm at Springbrook, near Pareora, said.
“So I made a commitment to send an email to them each day telling them what I was doing.”
The emails proved so popular the recipient list was expanded beyond immediate family to include friends.
“I’ve been sending them to 40-plus people directly. Many of them said I should write a book.”
In his opinion, most of what he wrote about, such as mowing the lawns, gardening and his mishaps, was boring.
However, what was ordinary to him possessed elements of quirky humour he was unaware of.
One of his sons, comedian Josh Thomson, saw the potential.
He started reading the emails to his comedian mates, which led to the creation of web series Subject: Dad, and then 30-minute episodes were filmed and screened on TV3.
Mr Thomson said the flow of emails had become more variable recently.
“I’m a lazy beggar and I love going fishing and making things.
“My oldest boy, Tevita, is still in Timaru. I usually text him every day.”
On Saturday evening the Subject: Dad web series won the best show: New Zealand factual category at the web fest awards and Josh also won a best director award for the show.
