A quirky, humorous web show that started out as emails from a dad to his nearest and dearest has picked up a prize at the 2018 New Zealand Web Fest, which gives awards for online content, web series and YouTube channels.

Chance to win:

Win tickets to 7 Days Live!

The Courier has a double pass to give away to 7 DaysLive! at Timaru’s Theatre Royal on December 7.

The cast of the TV comedy show, including Timaru’s Josh Thomson, is touring the country.

To enter, email with “7 Days competition” in the subject line and answer the following question: What is the name of Josh and David Thomson’s comedy web show that recently won the Best Show: New Zealand factual category at the 2018 NZ Web Fest? Email the answer, your name and a contact phone number to The Courier by 5pm on November 29.

“When my wife Soana passed away on the 11th of November six years ago, my three boys and sister-in-law were concerned how I’d look after myself,” David Thomson (77), a retired engineer who lives on a small farm at Springbrook, near Pareora, said.

“So I made a commitment to send an email to them each day telling them what I was doing.”

The emails proved so popular the recipient list was expanded beyond immediate family to include friends.

“I’ve been sending them to 40-plus people directly. Many of them said I should write a book.”

In his opinion, most of what he wrote about, such as mowing the lawns, gardening and his mishaps, was boring.

However, what was ordinary to him possessed elements of quirky humour he was unaware of.

Timaru-born comedian Josh Thomson

One of his sons, comedian Josh Thomson, saw the potential.

He started reading the emails to his comedian mates, which led to the creation of web series Subject: Dad, and then 30-minute episodes were filmed and screened on TV3.

Mr Thomson said the flow of emails had become more variable recently.

“I’m a lazy beggar and I love going fishing and making things.

“My oldest boy, Tevita, is still in Timaru. I usually text him every day.”

On Saturday evening the Subject: Dad web series won the best show: New Zealand factual category at the web fest awards and Josh also won a best director award for the show.
