Bold makeover earns national award

A Timaru business has proved it is a master in the industry.
Ranger Specialist Coatings, based at 143A King St, won the exterior commercial rework — contemporary section at the annual New Zealand Master Painters Awards, recently held in Fiji.
The company received the award for the quality of workmanship at 6A Arthur St, transforming the old, forgotten building into a new landmark in inner-city Timaru with its light blue, tangerine and peppermint colour scheme.
Ranger Specialist Coatings managing director Brad Sandri said it had been an exciting project to be involved in.
‘‘We received a huge amount of feedback from pedestrians and the general public expressing their enthusiasm for the bold colour scheme.’’
Stage one of a two-stage project for the building involved a complete exterior grind of the building’s facade. This revealed a considerable amount of cracking and degradation on the face of the building and around the top of the vertical columns and the parapets.
‘‘We did a large amount of behind-the-scene preparation with specialised systems before any paint went on the building.’’
Master Painters is the national body for the painting industry and is now 100 years old as a national representative body, with many affiliated regions serving their communities for more than 120 years.
The annual awards recognise the quality of work undertaken by master painters throughout New Zealand.
Entries are submitted to the judges and, from there, selected projects are inspected by officials.
Finalists are then named.
