The winners of the 2021-22 Courier Summer Photo Competition have been chosen.
Judges Simon Schollum and Brian High ran their experienced eyes over the dozens of entries, deciding which ones best captured the essence of summer.
It was not an easy task, photographs of stunning scenery up against cute shots of children, a bevy of bird pictures and other offerings.
First place goes to Suzanne Barcham, for her excellent shot of four young men having a blast in the waters of Caroline Bay. You can almost smell the sea spray and hear them yelling and laughing.
For this photograph, she wins a $100 voucher from Speight’s Alehouse.
Suzanne also placed second with her shot of Lake Tekapo. The judges noted she had taken the shot from a lower vantage point than people usually did, to capture more than just the quintessential lupins.
Third place went to Vimal Joseph, for his photograph of his 7-year-old son Johnny playing with bubbles. We have cropped this photograph to show it off at its best.
The judges also chose to award a highly commended to Lesley Tennent’s photograph of dad and daughter Tim and Darcie (2) Tennent swimming in the Otaio River.
This year, for the first time, the competition was split in two one, for children aged 15 and under.
The winner of the junior section was Martina Naydenova (11), who entered a brilliant summer shot taken at Kaiteriteri Beach.
This photo wins Martina two VIP passes from MovieMax Digital.
Runner-up was fellow 11-year-old Grace Steele with her lovely action shot of her sister Maggie jumping in their family’s backyard.
