A Timaru business is bringing the cream of the crop to the front gate. Real Milk Timaru owners Stu and Andrea Weir are now doing home delivery of their fresh milk to Timaru residents, in old-fashioned glass milk bottles. Mr Weir said the delivery service had been going for about a month and was ‘‘quietly increasing’’ in popularity. ‘‘It’s going well,’’ he said. ‘‘People really appreciate the fact the milk is being delivered in glass bottles.’’ Timaru has been split into three areas for the delivery boundaries, and the milk is $4 a litre. ‘‘Our target market is people that buy organic or only buy nonpasteurised, non-homogenised milk.’’ The milk is also still available at the business’ vending machine on Fairview Rd for $2.50 a litre. ‘‘We have received a lot of good feedback on the delivery service.’’ The Weirs run their business from the farm at 22 Fairview Rd that Mr Weir’s grandfather, Sam, bought in 1952. The couple set up in a franchise with Village Milk two years ago. When the Ministry for Primary Industries rules changed earlier this year, that franchise was disbanded and the couple have rebranded as Real Milk Timaru. ‘‘Since 1952, when Stu’s grandparents started milking cows, there have been a few changes in the way it’s done,’’ Mr Weir said. Traditionally, the Weirs ran a mainstream cow farm milking all year round, with about 220 cows on contract. The couple noticed, over the past 10 years, that more people were wanting fresh milk that was non-pasteurised and nonhomogenised. ‘‘As we know the benefits of drinking fresh milk, we set up a franchise about two years ago.’’ The set-up involves milking a small herd of cows separately, getting special treatment with cleaning and milk preparation. Milk from the farm is sent to Christchurch weekly for laboratory testing. The home delivery service, which is offered three days a week, is another example of the Weirs realising what their customers want. ‘‘We realised that many people don’t have the time to come down to the farm for their milk and we look forward to giving more people a fresh milk experience.’’ – Real Milk Timaru can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org or 027 221-4552 or by visiting www.realmilktimaru.co.nz.
