Timaru musician Sophie Bennet (15) has been awarded a Trinity College London music prize for gaining the top mark in the world in her grade five cello exam last year.
The Exhibition Awards have just been announced and Sophie’s mark of 96 earned her a monetary prize and handwritten certificate.
Her teacher, Rosemary Miller, said this was especially significant, as Trinity music exams were taken in 60 countries, and these awards were presented to only 10 students for outstanding achievement.
Sophie is a gifted musician who also plays the violin and is a member of Youth Orchestra South Canterbury and a chamber music trio. This tops off a successful year for Sophie, as she passed her theory of music, violin and cello exams, all with distinction.
